The Complaints (October 2009)

Every fall, book lovers and casual readers alike descend upon Toronto's Harbourfront Centre for the International Festival of Authors (IFOA), North America's largest literary festival. 2009 marked the 30th anniversary of the the event, and to distinguish Ian Rankin and his new book, The Complaints, from the plethora of other authors, McArthur & Company approached Montana Ridge for promotional services.

In an innovative approach to marketing, Montana Ridge developed a three-pronged strategy that leveraged existing social networks to further connect readers with Ian Rankin. Stage one focused on providing general information - biography, schedules, and photos - about Rankin and his new book through interfaces such as Twitter, Facebook, and McArthur's own website. Stage two focused on direct involvement with Rankin in the creation of video interviews and blog posts. Lastly, stage three called for contests and giveaways for IFOA-specific prize packs.

Outside of IFOA-specific services, Montana Ridge booked numerous interviews for Rankin using The Complaints as a point of reference, in addition to Rankin's interest in music and food. Over a week-long period surrounding IFOA XXX, Rankin appeared on various radio programs - Books on the Radio, Jazz FM, CFRB Radio, 640 AM Radio, Classical 96.3, CBC Ontario Today - and on television with CTV Canada AM's Seamus O'Regan. Rankin also attended numerous book signings at Toronto bookstores and conducted interviews with Maclean's Magazine and HELLO! Magazine.

Montana Ridge Enterprises also had the pleasure of promoting Ian Rankin's previous novel - the last of the Inspector Rebus series - Exit Music. Montana Ridge utilized a similar strategy of obtaining media coverage through newpaper, radio, and television interviews in promoting Rankin's novel.

Because of Montana Ridge's efforts, Exit Music was the number one bestseller in Canada throughout Ian Rankin's tour of the country.
